So What Is a Tardigrade?
While tiny (less than half a millimeter in length), tardigrades—also known as water bears--are mighty creatures. They are known not only to survive, but thrive in the toughest environments. Their habitats include hot springs, the top of the Himalayas, and 13,000-foot deep ocean water. They can withstand extreme cold close to absolute zero, heat up to 300 degrees F., pressure ten times that of the deepest marine trenches, and hundreds of times more radiation than humans.
In short, where bigger, flashier creatures fail, the tardigrade prevails—like the memory of a compelling story, carefully told.
